#1 – Girlhood

May 8th

girlhood

“Oh my god, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood sequel is out already!” said every snarky film writer on the internet… Girlhood is in fact a coming of age drama from French director Céline Sciamma.

The film tells the story of Marieme, a girl in her teens living in the projects outside Paris with a crap mother and an even crapper older brother. For those of you looking for a strong, female-led story this month – this is probably it.

#2 – Mad Max: Fury Road

May 15th

mad max fury road

The best teaser trailer of last year now has a film!

Tom Hardy is a man of diverse abilities. Just this week we’re seeing him in action as two Kray twins and that’s coming off a decent one-two-three of The Drop, Child 44 and  Locke. What we don’t see him doing very often is going all-out, balls-to-the-wall macho action. With Mad Max: Fury Road, BANE finally has a follow-up.

We’re watching the first two Mad Max films for this month’s Watch With Spooool by the way – more on that during the week.

#3 – Pitch Perfect 2

Pitch Perfect 2

Can anything top the cup song? Is Anna Kendrick still adorable? Just what will Hailee Steinfeld be doing?

We shall see.

#4 – Poltergeist

May 22nd

poltergeist

OK, I’m not a big fan of the old “horror remake”, but something about the Poltergeist trailer suggests this may actually have more in common with something like the remakes of The Amityville Horror or Evil Dead.

The director’s Reddit AMA also goes some way to appeasing those who are sceptical. Gil Kenan seems acutely aware of the risks of tackling such a famous title like this but seems confident enough to go with it. The casting choices of Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt and Jared Harris also seem slightly off-beat.

I’m approaching this one with caution – and confidence.

#5 – Results

May 29th

results

This may be mumblecore director Andrew Bujalski’s fifth feature, but he really made a name for himself with the unique and charming Computer Chess.

The film is about personal trainers and stars attractive people Guy Pearce and Cobie Smulders. Reviews after Sundance were mixed (though mostly positive), with Vulture saying enough to pull me in…

And Results feels so free-form, so liberated from the shackles of genre, that it becomes its own wonderfully alive and unpredictable thing. Plus, it’s funny as shit.
